FIFA and UEFA suspend Russia from international football

It came to a major blow for the Russian football team, where FIFA and UEFA recently announced that all the Russian teams both International and European Club Football will be suspended from competition until further notice.

The decision came amid rising escalation between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and also the ongoing military aggression. Russian Men’s Football team was scheduled to play at the World Cup qualifying playoff matches in three weeks.

UEFA have taken strict steps thereby ending their sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Also Spartak Moscow, a Russian football team is barred from taking part in the European League. They have successfully managed to reach the 16 stages last week, while Russia’s women’s team is kicked out of the upcoming Summer Euro 2022 championship. Opponent Poland has also refused to play against Russia at the World Cup Playoff match.

It was on Monday, the executive committee of UEFA called a meeting to decide on whether to exclude Russian teams from major competitions. On Sunday, the World Governing body allowed the Russian team to participate in the world cup as long as they played under the name Football Union of Russia without using a flag or national anthem.

A statement reads “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA council and the UEFA Executive committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice”.
