How does the FIFA World Cup standings works?

These are the main structural rules for understanding World Cup standings.

Every four years, 32 sides are divided into eight groups, which are labeled A–H. This leaves four teams in each group.

Each team is drawn from four pots, and each team supports one of the groups. Based on their performance in World Cup qualifiers (which take place before the competition starts), sides are assigned to specific pots. This allows for a more evenly distributed competition, which creates exciting knockout rounds.

Each team will face off against the other two sides of their group when the competition starts. For a win, three points are awarded, for a draw one point, and for a loss zero points are given.

The top two performers from each group move on to the knockout stage after the three group stage matches. Here, standings can be signed off for the tournament. After the group stages, we move to the knockout form. This starts with Round of Sixteen, and ends with the World Cup Final.

A second-place finish will not guarantee you a place in the knockout stages. However, it is crucial that you finish first. Most of the time, the stronger side will win the Round. The eight teams finishing first will play the eight that finish second.
